Planning~ Jack Johnson Digipak
When doing research into existing digipaks, I thought it would be appropriate to look into Jack Johnson's. This will enable me to truly understand the message he is trying to portray and what themes he wanted to get across. Like Johnson, I am keen to keep the colours quite similar; warm and autumnal. This gives off the vibe of him being a mellow artist. Additionally, with this particular song, he used photos (possibly quite old) which I think are used to show his influences. Especially since the song is about love so this could be demonstrating the people and things that he love and makes him better.
These are all themes I am keen to get across.
Johnson uses the image of a guitar in both his digipak and promotional image for "Better Together." This is to show him as an acoustic, original, authentic artist who creates his own sound. I will be taking inspiration from this and also plan to incorporate a guitar within my digipak somewhere.
What I would like to develop is a theme in the song which hasn't necessarily been so obviously portrayed. This is the idea of reflection and closeness; taking time to appreciate the things around you that make you better.
What I absolutely love about Jack Johnson's images is how natural they are. Being that he isn't a mainstream artist is hugely reflected in this as unlike others, he isn't posing or being a version of himself that he thinks the industry might want but instead staying true to himself and being happy in his own skin and the world he is in; this shows he is in the industry because he loves it. For that reason I also would love to include natural images that don't come across as too posy.
It was really useful looking at Jack's digipak as it has given me lots of ideas that I would like to carry out in my own one.
